For some weeks now Young-pyo Lee and Ji-sung Park have been trying to find their way about.

The new PSV signings are curious. And grateful for the chance that were offered to them, following the 2002 World Cup, in which they were so successful.

The contrast is conspicuous. On the pitch they are aggressive in the correct sense of the word and are anxious to prove themselves. Off the pitch they are modest and quiet. Young-pyo Lee and Ji-sung Park are not willing to say much about themselves, which is in line with their Asiatic background. "Western people have a more individualistic approach", explains Guus Hiddink. "They are more communicative. A South Korean does not fancy putting himself above other people in a group and he would not really like to stress his distinctive features. On the pitch, though, they would, but never off the pitch."
그들이 다른이들과 대조되는것은, 운동장 안과 밖에서의 차이가 현저하다는 것이다.

The first meeting with Park and Lee is cordial, with a firm shake of hands and a "nice to meet you". This is about the entire English idiom the two PSV Korean players have mastered. Communicating with them proved to be one of the biggest obstacles during their first few months in Holland, they realize, especially when a game is being played. During the pre match discussions and post match review an interpreter is always on hand; PSV have employed the Dutch Korean Woojin Chung in full time service. On the pitch the two Koreans have to resort to some shouting, some sweeps of the hand and the few Dutch and English words they happen to know. Hiddink: "We try to teach them some specific football phrases, like: In your back, and mark your man and things like that. We have also put them on paper for them".
"만나서 반갑습니다."
굳은 악수와 함께 건넨 박지성과 이영표의 첫 인사는 정말 마음에서 우러나오는 진실된 것이었다.
이것은 정말 두 PSV 한국인 선수들이 익힌, 지금 상황에 꼭 맞는 흠 잡을데 없는 영어식 표현이었다.(역자주: 네덜란드에서 두 선수가 뛰게 되어서 정말 기쁘다는 기자의 심정을 표현한 것임)
그들과의 대화는 그들이 네덜란드에서 첫 몇달간을 보내는데 있어 가장 큰 장애물 중의 하나가 의사소통이 될 것임을 입증했다. 특히 경기를 하는 동안 그들은 그것을 실감하게 될 것이다.
이전 경기에 대한 토론과 그다음 경기에 대한 논평을 하는 동안 통역이 항상 옆에 있어야만 했다.-PSV는 네덜란드 교포 정우진씨를 풀타임으로 고용했다.

히딩크: "우리는 두선수에게 특수화 시킨 축구 어법 몇개를 가르쳤습니다. '네 뒤에' '전담 선수를 마크해' 같은 것들요. 또한 종이에도 써 줬죠."
Twice a week the two Koreans get Dutch lessons. Park says: In every dad life, we have no problems and we can manage. But it is a different story when we are on the pitch, but we are quite sure things will work out fine. Hiddink feels:"They are intelligent lads and they understand what is said to them and what their specific tasks on the pitch are. Obviously things are not perfect yet, but the language barrier is diminishing and not a real problem any more".
일주일에 두번 두 한국인은 네덜란드어 레슨을 받는다.
박지성이 말하길: "하루하루 사는 것은 별 문제 없이 그럭저럭 지낼 수 있습니다. 그러나 경기장에서는 완전히 다른 문제입니다. 하지만 우리는 잘해낼 것입니다."
히딩크의 견해는: "그들은 내가 그들에게 주문하는 것이 무엇인지, 경기장에서 그들에게 부여된 임무가 무엇인지를 이해할 만큼 똑똑합니다. 분명한 것은, 아직은 완벽하지 않지만 언어의 장벽은 줄어들고 있고, 더이상 문제가 되지 않을 것이라는 사실 입니다."
Park is somewhat detached, more quiet and tranquil than the more expressive and outgoing Lee. This may have to do with age; Park will be 22 on Tuesday 25th February and is relatively inexperienced. Lee is 25 and has been part of the world of football for quite some time now. We talked to them in a classroom in De Herdgang, the training ground that was recently renovated. Morning training and lunch are over, in a few minutes the afternoon training session will start. Park has been in Holland for three weeks; Lee has been here a few days less, after the two had joined the PSV first team squad on a training camp in the Turkish town of Belek. For Lee it was the first time he was outside South Korea. He grew up in Anyang, a town at a stone뭩 throw from the capital Seoul. In South Korea you will never join a local football club, when you are a kid, because they simply do not exist. The system in South Korea can be compared to the American system where you practise a sport in high school or college. Lee started playing football when he was at primary school in Anyang and later at secondary school and at Kookon University where he studied governmental issues and politics. In 2000 he joined Anjang LG Cheetahs, the local professional football club.
박지성은 다소 동떨어져 있는것 같았다. 더 표현을 많이하고 외향적인 이영표에 비해 더 말이없고 차분했다.
이것은 아마도 나이 때문인 것 같다. 박지성은 2월 25일 화요일이면 22세가 되고 상대적으로 경험이 적다. 이영표는 25세이고 축구의 세계에 발을 들여 놓은지 꽤 되었다.
우리는 최근 개보수한 연습구장인 드 헤르드강의 강의실에서 대화를 나누었다.
오전 훈련과 점심식사가 끝나고 짧은 오후 훈련이 시작될 것이다.
박지성은 네덜란드에 온지 3주가 되었고, 이영표는 터키 벨렉에 있는 PSV 1군 트레이닝 캠프에 합류했다가 여기에 온지 며칠 되지 않는다.
이영표의 경우 한국 밖에서 생활하기는 이번이 처음이다. 그는 수도 서울에서 얼마 떨어지지 않은 안양에서 자랐다.
만일 여러분이 한국에서 어린 시절에 지역 축구 클럽에 가입 하려고 한다면, 할 수 없을 것이다. 왜냐하면 그게 없기 때문이다.
한국의 시스템은 고교나 대학에서 스포츠를 배우는 미국 시스템과 비교될 수 있을 것이다.
이영표는 안양초등학교 시절에 축구를 시작했고 중학교를 거쳐 건국(Kookon-_-)대학교에서 정치외교학을 공부했다.
그리고 2000년에 지역 프로 축구 클럽 안양 LG 치타스에 입단했다.

Park grew up in the outskirts of Seoul, played football at Suwan Saeryu primary school. While he was a pupil at secondary school, he was a promising football player, which made him wonder for the first time if he would ever be a professional player. At Myungji University he followed an education in order to become a Physical Training teacher and already at an early age his dream had come true. When he was only eighteen years of age, a Japanese club from the J-League, Kyuoto Purple Sanga, offered him a lucrative deal. As far as the western world was concerned, there were only unknown players active in this competition. But all this changed, when, during the 2002 World Cup, Korean football was all of a sudden the centre of interest. "My life has changed considerably", admits Park. "I am recognized by everybody; everyone knows who I am and what I do. It takes away a lot of energy, but funnily enough it gives me a lot of energy, too. It has greatly enhanced the challenge and drive to perform well. I want to show beautiful things to the crowd."
For Lee the difference with the time before the World Cup is less spectacular. He had been a player of the national team for some years, when the whole world of football came to South Korea and Japan. "And in Korea the national team has always been popular, far more popular any way than the football clubs".
박지성은 서울 교외에서 자랐다. 축구는 수원 세류 초등학교에서 시작했다.
중학교 시절에 그는 전도유망한 축구선수로 인정받았고, 이것이 그가 프로선수의 꿈을 가지게 되는 계기가 되었다.
명지대학교 시절에는 체육선생님이 되기 위해 교육에 관심을 가지기도 했으나 이미 그에게는 어린시절의 꿈이 실현되어 있었다. 그는 겨우 18살 때 J-리그 교토퍼플상가에서 이적료 없는 영입(lucrative deal)을 제안 받았다.
유럽무대로의 진출도 고려해 봤지만, 그는 아직 축구 변방에서 뛰고 있는 무명의 선수 중 하나에 불과했다.
그러나 2002년 월드컵을 치루는 동안 모든것이 바뀌어, 한국축구는 모든이들의 관심의 중심에 서게된다.
"제 인생이 상당히 바뀌어 버렸죠." 박지성도 수긍했다.
"모든 사람들이 절 알아봐요. 모든이들이 제가 누군지, 제가 뭘 했는지 알아요. 이건 상당히 피곤한 일이기도 하지만, 묘하게도 저에게 많은 힘을 주는 일이기도 하지요. 그들의 관심은 저의 의욕을 증진시키고 운동을 잘할 수 있도록 저를 인도하지요. 저는 그사람들에게 정말 멋진 모습을 보여주고 싶어요."
이영표의 경우는 월드컵 전과 후가 그렇게 극적으로 다른것은 아니었다. 한일월드컵이 열릴 당시 그는 이미 몇년동안이나 국가대표 였었다.
"그리고 한국에서는 국가대표팀은 언제나 클럽팀들 보다 인기가 높습니다."
He emphasizes the effects of the success story that started in June. The World Cup has opened all gates for South Korean football players, who look upon Europe as a football paradise. PSV, Europe, it is a big step in the careers of the multi functional South Koreans. Lee: "There is always room for improvement. I now play at a higher level. I want to learn as many new things as possible and I want to develop myself as a player. And God wanted me to be here". He gets a necklace with a crucifix from under his t-shirt. "Are you also religious?"
Park: "I am very curious about European football. Why is it that so many good players come from here; why is it that European football sets the standards? I want to know the answers and I want to grow as a player".
그는 6월에 시작된 성공스토리의 효과에 대해 역설했다. 월드컵은 축구의 천국 유럽으로의 진출을 모색하는 한국 선수들에게 모든 기회의 문을 열어줬다.
PSV는 한국축구선수들이 빅리그로 진출하기 위해 경력을 쌓는데 큰 발자국이 될 것이다.
이영표: "발전할 수 있는 길은 항상 있습니다. 전 이제 더 높은 레벨에서 경기합니다.
저는 가능한한 많은 새로운 것을 배우고 싶고, 저 자신을 선수로서 개발하고 싶습니다.
그리고 하나님이 저를 여기로 인도하셨습니다."
그는 티셔츠 안에 십자가 목걸이를 하고 있다.
"당신도 신앙을 가지고 있나요" (<- 퍼온이 : 역시 영표선수... -_-;;)
박지성: "전 유럽축구에 대해서 정말로 알고 싶습니다. 왜 그렇게 많은 좋은 선수들이 여기로 오는지, 왜 축구라고 하면 다들 유럽축구를 거론할까요? 저는 그 답을 알고싶습니다. 그리고 저는 그런 선수로 성장하고 싶습니다."
It was that very drive that made them come to Europe. It was not the money nor the status. Hiddink explains: "If it had been Park뭩 object to get rich quickly, he should have stayed in Japan. He can earn there four or five times more than he does now. He would probably have become a big star over there, but he and Lee want to find out whether they can make it in Europe. And that뭩 what they are fighting for."
이런 의문이 그들을 유럽으로 인도했다. 이것은 돈 때문도 위신 때문도 아니었다.

Part of that fight is to settle in Eindhoven in the Netherlands as quickly as possible. They are sophisticated persons. As international football players they have travelled all over the world in two years. Park played in Japan for three years. "I was in Holland at the 2000 Euro Cup", remembers Lee with a smile. "Then I went to the Philips Stadium for the first time, where I watched the England-Portugal game."
그 투쟁의 일환은 네덜란드 아인트호벤에 가능한한 빨리 정착하는 것이다.
그들은 촌사람이 아니다. 국가대표로 2년동안 전세계를 돌아다녔다.
박지성은 3년동안 일본에서 뛰었다.
"저는 2000년 유로컵 때 네덜란드에 있었습니다." 이영표가 웃으면서 기억해냈다.
"그때 필립스 스타디움에 처음 가봤는데, 거기에서 잉글랜드 대 포르투칼 경기를 봤습니다."
PSV try to guide the two players as well as possible. They always do that when they have closed a deal with a foreign player. Apart from the language lessons by Leon Smeets, Park and Lee are taught more things. PSV Manager Frank Arnesen explains:?Obviously we are dealing with grown up people. At PSV we give them lots of space to find out things themselves. In that process we try to be of assistance. We give them information about the country and its people and we inform them about all kinds of practical issues.

우리는 이 나라와 우리 국민에 대한 정보들을 알려주고, 그것에 관한 모든 실용적인 정보들을 알려 줍니다."
An interpreter is regularly informed about their wishes. "These are very limited where it concerns luxury", says Hiddink. "The other day we offered them an extra bed in the bedrooms , in case they would like to accommodate a visitor. That was not necessary, they told us. If we receive any Koreans we can always sleep on a mat. That뭩 what they are used to." Park and Lee do not live in the same apartment, but are often together. Arnesen: "The situation they find themselves in is different for each of them. Park has closed a 3,5 year deal. Lee is on loan for six months. But it is an advantage that they are together in Eindhoven, where they can exchange their experiences in their native language".
통역은 정기적으로 두선수가 원하는 것을 구단측에 알려준다.
"통역으로 해결하는데는 한계가 있습니다." 히딩크의 말이다.
"일전에 우리는 두선수를 위해 침실에 놓을 간이침대를 주문했었죠. 손님들이 묶을 때를 대비해서요. 근데 그건 필요없는 일이었습니다. 그들이 우리에게 말했죠. 만일 한국에서 손님이 오면 우리가 그냥 요에서 자겠다구요. 그게 그들에게 익숙합니다."
박지성과 이영표는 같은 아파트에서 살지 않는다. 그러나 종종 같이 지낸다.
아르네센: 그때 그들은 각자에 대한 입장이 다르다는 것을 알게되겠죠. 박지성은 3년반이 계약기간이고 이영표는 6개월 임대입니다. 그러나 아인트호벤에 같이 있다는 것은 유리한 점입니다. 같이있으면서 그들은 한국어로 자신들의 경험을 교환할 수 있을테니까요."
At the moment Ji-sung Park뭩 parents are in Holland. His father will have to return to South Korea in a few weeks, because he has a shop of own, but his mother is likely to stay for three more months. They often get in touch with other South Korean football players in Holland and the neighbouring countries, such as Feyenoord player Song, Nam-il Kim, who serves the Dutch club Excelsior and Ki-Hyean Seol, who plays for the Belgian club SC Anderlecht. Park and Lee find it hard to get used to the Dutch nine-to-five o?clock rhythm. They were raised in the hustle and bustle of the metropolis of Seoul, where there is a 24-hour economy and now they are in Eindhoven, where it is fairly quiet and where nothing much is going on after six o?clock. But they are more occupied with football and with trying to come up to their usual level. Park made his debut in the Dutch league against RKC. And both he and Lee made their first appearance for the home crowd in the second half in the PSV-FC Zwolle tie. The crowd gave them a warm welcome - they were already being hailed during the warming-up, but they themselves are not too impressed by their own performances. Park: "I am a happy man, also thanks to the players who have fully accepted us, but I am not completely fit. Put in percentages, I am at 60, maybe 70 % of what I am capable of".
Lee: "we are content that we can work with so many good and friendly colleagues. Life is treating us fine!"
현재 박지성의 부모님은 네덜란드에 와 있다. 가게를 갖고있기 때문에 그의 아버지는 몇주 후에는 한국에 돌아가야만 한다. 그러나 그의 어머니는 3달정도 머무를 예정이다.
그들은 자주 네덜란드와 그 주변국에 진출해 있는 다른 한국출신 축구선수들과 연락을 주고받는다.
페예노르트 선수 송종국, 엑셀시오르의 김남일, 벨기에 클럽 SC 안더레흐트에서 뛰고 있는 설기현이 바로 그들이다.
박지성과 이영표는 네덜란드의 9시 출근 5시 칼퇴근의 생활리듬에 적응하기가 쉽지 않다.
그들은 24시간 격렬하고 부산하게 움직이는 거대도시 서울의 한 부분이었지만, 지금은 6시 이후로는 정막만이 감도는 아인트호벤에 있다.
그러나 덕분에 그들은 축구와, 그들의 실력을 향상시키는데 더 전념할 수 있을 것이다.
박지성은 RKC와의 경기를 통해 네덜란드 리그에 데뷰했다. 그리고 그와 이영표는 동점을 이룬 PSV 와 FC 쯔볼레와의 후반전을 통해 홈 관중들에게 첫선을 보였다.
홈팬들은 그들을 뜨겁게 환영했다 -그들이 웜업을 할 때 부터 이미 환호하고 있을 정도였다.
하지만 두선수는 자신들의 경기력에 대해 만족해 하지 않았다.
박지성: "전 행복한 사람입니다. 그리고 우리를 진심으로 받아들여준 선수들에게 감사합니다. 하지만 전 아직 완벽하게 적응하지 못했습니다. 퍼센트로 보면, 제 역량의 60에서 70% 정도의 상태 입니다."
이영표: "우리는 실력있고 친절한 많은 동료들과 함께 할 수 있어서 만족스럽습니다. 우린 복이 많은가 봅니다!"
